MUSIC: Album Review

Mar 23, 2025

After an excruciating four-year, two-month, and 22-day wait—totaling 1,550 days—Playboi Carti has finally released his long-awaited album, Music. While Carti is no stranger to long gaps between projects, this marks his longest hiatus since his 2017 debut.

The album features 30 tracks, showcasing a range of styles, voices, and inflections. His deep-voiced delivery, first introduced on FE!N and continued in tracks like 2024, EVILJ0RDAN and HBA, adds variety but thankfully doesn’t dominate the entire project. Instead, the balance between his low, high, and mid-range vocal styles makes for a dynamic and engaging listen.

The first five tracks start strong, but the next ten feel repetitive after a few listens, with CRANK and BACKD00R standing out—though Kendrick Lamar’s feature on the latter feels forced. Fortunately, the album’s second half delivers, packed with standout tracks like I SEEEEEE YOU BABY BOI, OLYMPIAN, OPM BABI, and OVERLY.

Despite its highs and lows, Music maintains strong replay value—an essential quality for an album fans have waited so long to hear.
